In the face of adversity, it’s tempting to view the problem as a barrier between where we are and where we want to be. If only it wasn’t there, then all would be well. If only we didn’t have to feel-crawl our way through the forest of grief and heartbreak. If only we didn’t have to open the wounds of childhood trauma, remove the pus and stitch ourselves back up. If only, if only.
We poke our heads up over the fence and admire the glistening grass on the other side. If only this stupid fence wasn’t in the way, we think, then I could go touch that grass. In our eyes, the fence blocks us from getting to where we want to go.
But there is no denying the presence of the fence. And, so long as we keep glancing over with wishful thinking, we aren’t focusing on the true task at hand: busting through the fence.
The challenge that we so fervently wish would vanish is the response to our call for growth. It’s is not blocking the way — it is the way. Through our endurance of life’s vicissitudes, we learn meaningful lessons.
The only way out is through.
